Pathways to Impact: Coordinating to halt the damage of floods in the Lower Incomati Basin
The Pathways to Impact series highlights CRIDF’s long-term initiatives that have been proven to have a tangible impact on people’s lives.
This brief outlines CRIDF’s support activities in the Incomati Basin, an area often hit by flood waters that affect both private sugar estates and local smallholder farmers. CRIDF was asked by Africa’s largest sugar company, Illovo Sugar, to find ways to protect their estate without unintended consequences for others. To do this, CRIDF conducted a vulnerability assessment, mobilised a public–private steering committee and proved a cost–benefit case to funders who could support the building of new flood infrastructure. CRIDF’s tools meant that stakeholders could consider different protection options with an informed understanding of their risk outcomes for vulnerable areas and groups. When Illovo first approached CRIDF, it was to help with better managing flooding in their own estate. By the end of the project they were thinking about how to support communities throughout the Lower Incomati and other basins where they work.
