Climate change implications for water resources in the Limpopo River Basin
This discussion paper published by the International Food Policy Research Institute analyses the effects of climate change on hydrology and water resources in the Limpopo River Basin, using a pair of models to simulate climate effects on hydrology and irrigation in parts of Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The results show that water supply situations are expected to worsen considerably by 2030. The paper emphasises that any expansion of irrigated areas, as a strategy for climate adaptation, will need to take into account future changes in water availability in African river basins.
